Water is the staff of life. For years here in Australia we have been battling through droughts and bush fires. Water rationing and increased rural and urban water rates has really driven home to everybody the adage “Don’t waste a precious drop”. So, even though I had been successfully growing fruit and vegetables for more than 25 years, I was keen to set up my farm with best practice watering systems.
Patrick O’Shannessey works for Toro Australia, the largest single supplier of irrigation products. We met through the local school Gib Gate which is attended by his 11 yaear old son Dom and my 10 year old son Jonny. The two boys and I were in the same woodwork class together after school. I was over 40 years older than anyone else in the class and was terrified of finishing in the bottom quadrant, but that’s a whole other story.
Patrick visited my farm and along with Toro agreed to feed their expertise into my venture. I knew many potential growers would be looking at my site and I wanted to be a good example of how to maximise water usage. Once the orchard and veggie gardens were prepared, here’s what happened.
